Background Information about Carving and Sculpture
Working as a tree surgeon complements my artistic endeavours, enabling sourcing of suitable and unique forms to sculpt. Working with natural insinuations, accentuating form:
* The inclusion of metal into wood, as the tree grows over, through or around, anything in its way, an expression of natures power, to overcome and grow beyond restriction.
* Burrs and buttress roots, limbs and branches fusing together creating improbable natural forms, perfect.
My art has grown through my interaction in, and experience of, the world around me, being either a reflection or an expression of this.
Most of my personal work is an expression of our (both as individuals and as a race), relationship with "the mother ship" - nature, mother earth - mankind a baby who never grew up, ever reliant on the planets resources in order to sustain itself, however wisely, cradled eternal in her bosom.
Art can only ever imitate nature, as all we can experience is nature, as even our thoughts, emotions and interaction with others, is within nature. So why try to recreate a literal copy of a natural form (already as beautiful as nature can make it)? Hence abstraction.
Through abstraction we create distance from which to contemplate the expression, and its underlying concepts, both intended by the artist, and interpreted by the viewer.
